Intimate is a workshop serie with no topic! That way, we can address a specific and different topic each year, at the time it is the most important to address this topic. The goal of the workshop is to bring together the world experts on a given topic and offer them an environment to brainstorm for 2 consecutive days on the recent advanced made and what should be the next step. The workshop's intend is also to put together people from academia and industry to facilitate the transfer of a new research area to operational use.
Intimate 2003 was about Traffic Matrices ; 2005 on Sampling. Intimate 2006 will be on Anomaly Diagnosis on the Internet. Subsequently to progress made in online network measurements and trafic analysis, network anomaly diagnosis has recently become a very hot topic. New approaches to anomaly detections have been developed. They are quite promising, but have fundamental limitations that have not been studied yet such as scalability, distributed implementation, time granularity at which detection should be made. And more fundamentally, questions to be discussed are what is an anomaly? is unsupervized diagnosis of anomalies feasible? Last, if a lot of progress has been made in detection of anomalies, automated characterization remains an open issue.
Participation to the workshop is by invitation only; each participant will give a short talk. The workshop will take place in Paris on July 6-7. There will be no registration charge. A workshop dinner will be organized on July 6th. A list of local accommodations will be notified in advance to workshop participants.
