Sampling has become a hot topic in both research and development of measurement and analysis techniques for internet traffic. Significant progress has been made in deploying sampling algorithms, both in routers and measurement collection infrastructures in order to limit measurement bandwidth, and also in back-end systems in order to reduce data volumes and query execution time. Sampling methods for routers are currently under standardization in the IETF. A recent burst of theoretical activity has produced new sampling methods that are matched to the characteristics of internet traffic.

The focus of the workshop is to tie together the theoretical and practical directions in internet traffic sampling. Workshop participants will be leaders in the field working in the academic, industrial and standards communities. The aim is to hear about new or partial developments, distill recent progress in the field, and understand the challenges in integrating new research results into equipment and tools used by internet service providers. Sampling techniques from other fields, and complementary methods with the same aims, are also in scope.

The workshop program will comprise (i) short contributed talks; (ii) longer invited talks; (iii) a panel discussion; (iv) plenty of time for open discussion and feedback. There will be no printed proceedings; talks will be collected on a public website.

Participation in the workshop is by invitation only; participants are encouraged to propose a short talk. The workshop will take place in Paris on July 28-29, i.e., at the end of the week immediately preceding the Paris 63rd IETF meeting. There will be no registration charge. A workshop dinner will be organized for July 28th. A list of local accommodations will be notified in advance to workshop participants.
